Complying with IS 5765 standards for test sieves is a good baseline, but practically, sizing depends heavily on fluid viscosity.

  • Diesel/Light Oils: 60 to 100 mesh strainer.
  • Furnace Oil/HFO: 20 to 40 mesh strainer.

Using a 100-mesh strainer on cold furnace oil will cause a massive pressure drop. I've seen maintenance teams strip their supply pump gears because they got the strainer mesh wrong and cavitated the pump.

2. Air Eliminators

Furnace Oil Flow Meter Setup: Managing Viscosity and Steam Tracing

North Indian winters in places like Baddi or Pantnagar turn furnace oil into a substance resembling road tar. Pumping cold FO through a high-precision meter will either stall the rotors or burst the housing due to extreme pressure spikes.

To maintain a pumpable viscosity (typically between 15 cSt and 40 cSt), furnace oil lines require steam tracing or electrical heat tracing. However, applying heat introduces a massive risk to the flow meter's electronics.

Field Rules for Tracing High-Viscosity Lines:

  1. Thermal Isolation: Never wrap steam tracing lines directly around the flow meter body. The CE-107 has a maximum operating temperature of 80°C. I've had to replace melted digital registers because a pipefitter thought more heat was better.
  2. Bottom Tracing: Run the tracing line parallel to the bottom of the pipe. Heat rises. It's simple physics, but naturally warms the fluid column evenly.
  3. Insulation Cut-Outs: When wrapping the pipe in glass wool and aluminum cladding, leave a calculated cut-out around the meter's register head to allow ambient cooling of the electronics.

Warning: Never hit a cold positive displacement meter with full pump pressure. Oil Flow Meter Piping Guide

Unlike magnetic or ultrasonic meters, PD and oval gear meters are highly forgiving of piping geometry.

  • Straight Runs: You do not need 10D (10 pipe diameters) upstream and 5D downstream. You can install an elbow or a valve immediately adjacent to the meter flanges without affecting the 0.5% accuracy of our CE-118 model.
  • Orientation: Meters should preferably be installed in horizontal lines with the rotor shafts in a horizontal plane. In industrial estates across India, the most common failure point I see in digital oil flow meters isn't mechanical—it's electrical. Plants suffer from severe voltage fluctuations and harmonic noise from heavy VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) operations nearby.
